SELF-ACTUALIZATION AS A MEANS OF COPING WITH TEACHER EMOTIONAL BURNOUT

The paper presents results of research into teachers’ emotional burnout, self-attitudes and self-actualization. Prior to the study we hypothesized that burnout syndrome correlated with teachers’ self-awareness, behavior and experiences connected with their professional activities. Ability to cope with emotional burnout provides psychological health and safety of a teacher in the educational environment. Research revealed correlates of teachers’ emotional burnout and self-attitudes (intrapersonal conflict, self-derogation, self-concept rigidity). Negative correlations were found between self-actualization variables (creativity, creative abilities, self-acceptance and seeing value in others) and emotional burnout. Teachers’ satisfaction with work correlated with their self-acceptance and self-confidence. Thus, the study testifies to the fact that self-actualization is a means of coping with emotional burnout and intrapersonal conflicts.
